June Welcome – Live Well, Travel Well, and Breathe Hatteras Island
Swim through the summer.
Summer is here! The kids are out. The tourists are back. And there are plenty of music, markets, and art events popping up all over Hatteras Island to keep us entertained. Here I am, ready to jump right in and give it my all!
Living here on the island, I try to channel those vacay vibes and squeeze in mini staycation experiences between my work, family, and other commitments. Embracing the ‘beach hair, don’t care’ attitude keeps me feeling sunny over the busy summer season and ready for whatever comes my way.
Building on last month’s ‘ripple effect,’ I’ve decided I want to swim (again) to reconnect with something I enjoy and keep my wellness activities going throughout the summer months. I’ve been so inspired by our island’s water rescue services and their weekly training regimes. I also came across the American Cancer Society Swim 5-Miles monthly challenges—for a typical 25-yard pool, that’s 352 laps. Aiming for 30 laps or swimming for 30-45 minutes, three times a week sounds way more friendly.
Without access to a public community facility or the luxury of a private pool, my swims will be limited to battling the waves in the ocean or dipping my toe in the sound. This reminded me how important an initiative like the Hatteras Island Aquatic Center is for our small island and their efforts to garner support for a much-needed community pool and safe year-round swimming.
Making the most of my beach time, you’ll find me splashing around near the pier with my goggles, fins, and a floatie as I clock in my swims. Feeling Inspired? Try the Fessenden Center’s water aerobics and water yoga classes starting on June 24th. You’re welcome to dive in!
